Running, Heartburn and Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA)

I've been slightly bummed over the past few days due to an aggravating little issue: painful heartburn while running.  Though I've never been one to experience heartburn, acid reflux or anything of the like, I do have exercise induced asthma. According to my research, these two conditions often go hand in hand. However, running (and only running) has brought this health issue to light for me.  Otherwise, heartburn is a nonissue in my life. (Thank goodness!)

These are the remedies I've tried: Tums and over the counter antacids before running, no food 1-2 hours before running, and running "gently."  In other words, a light jog.  It seems like it's time to step up my attack of this issue, though.  So, I did some googling.  That's the natural next step...right?

Here are some tips I found in surfing the web:

  • No high fat or high protein foods 2 hours prior to running

  • Limit coffee (this is going to be highly problematic for me)

  • Drink water throughout the exercise

  • Take an antacid regularly

  • Avoid spicy foods

  • Take inhalers prior to exercise (I always, always do this)

  • Avoid exercise when its too cold, there is too much pollen and/or pollution

  • Wear loose clothing

I'm certainly going to make some diet and lifestyle changes to see if I can naturally combat this issue.  Wish me luck!
