I have a few favorites thus far. I happen to enjoy NPR's Wait! Wait! Don't Tell Me! when I want a nice laugh and a good dose of A.M. sarcasm. When I need a healthy dose of...well, health, I listen to a podcast that inspires me to get off my butt, The Jillian Michaels Show. Jillian is funny, real, honest and no-nonsense about health, wellness, money, life, relationships, you name it! Ever since becoming glued to the television when The Biggest Loser began several years ago, I've been a fan (Bob Harper is also wonderful).
In the most recent podcast I listened to (Can I Afford to Go Organic?), Jillian talked about going organic on a budget. In other words, what foods are necessary to buy organic and what non-organic foods are minimally dangerous or unhealthy.
Here's what I remember from this episode:
- Only buy WILD salmon, never farmed. (My devoted readers may remember this tip from a previous article. :)
- If you can't buy organic fruit, buy thick skinned fruits. So, bananas, apples, etc. Stay away from non-organic blueberries, raspberries and other fruits that can easily be punctured.
- Grass fed beef always, never corn fed.
- Tons of health issues and problems are connected back to processed, non-organic foods. Basically, if it doesn't have a limited life span, it's probably processed. That's why Twinkies can stay "fresh" and eatable for so long and bananas eventually rot.
She obviously discussed considerably more than I remember during the 50 minute podcast, but I guess that's what you get when your commute consists of walking across a bridge and viewing perhaps one of the most beautiful views of Manhattan. It's easy to get a bit side tracked. :) Long story short, go organic when you can, and listen to this podcast! Download them...just do it!
Anybody else have good suggestions for podcasts? I'm happy to add to my library! I'm mostly interested in podcasts related to yoga, current events, and food (go figure).
