Word of the Day: Thankful

I admit it.  I am one of those people who frequently gets wrapped up in seemingly trivial matters.  Traffic, dishes in the sink, a long to do list (with no check marks), rainy weather, lateness.  You name it, and it’s probably irked me at one point or another. I’m what you call particular.

I’ve decided to combat this less-than-desirable trait in a simple way. Every day, I will think of at least one thing I’m thankful for.

Today, I’m thankful for my creativity.  I love that I can walk into a room and decorate it in an appealing manner.  I love that my clothes are truly an expression of who I am.  I love that I can create works of art with paper, knick knacks and photos. I love that I’m inspired by others’ creativity.

One of the most inspiring places to me creatively is the East Village in New York City—it’s bursting with individuality, color, life, finesse and edge.  I remember frequently taking weekend strolls through this neighborhood just to soak in the flavor. One of my favorite finds were the mosaic light posts.  I’m sure many people pass these by everyday without a second glance, but I think they are one of the most inspirational, yet simple works of art I’ve ever seen.  I love the idea of dressing up something utilitarian (like a lightpost) and giving it some pizzaz.

The man behind these works of art is Jim Powers.  See him at work-there’s nothing quite like the focus behind a person’s art whether that are be creating mosaics, building bridges, educating children, paving sidewalks or cooking food. You can always tell a person that loves what they do and lives for it.
